Faridkot
Who says Punjabis only survive on doles?

Around 20,000 people of this district have pooled resources to have their own water supply set up.

A committee of citizens has been set up to identify land and purchase it for the purpose.

"For long time we have had the demand for the waterworks in the area as drinking water crisis was worsening every year with the increase in population," Rajbir Singh, a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Faridkot, told The Times of India.

"After a lot of political convincing, we prevailed upon the finance minister to allot grants for the waterworks and in his budgetary speech in Vidhan Sabha for year 2009-2010, the finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal announced Rs 1.75 crore for the construction of the waterworks in Faridkot but all efforts to get land for the construction work were proving to be naught," he said.

After the budgetary announcements of the grants for waterworks, the municipal committee (MC) Faridkot planned the waterworks construction on a portion of Red Cross land in the center of the town. Some time back this land was under the forcible possession of a self-styled Akali leader. The court of additional district judge held this leader guilty of preparing fake revenue record to usurp the land.
