The NMDC has announced an ambitious project based on the concept of boosting efficiency of distribution and reducing wastage of water
Aiming at ensuring 24X7 water supply in New Delhi Municipal Council areas, the civic body on Friday announced an ambitious project based on the concept of boosting efficiency of distribution and reducing wastage of water. NDMC mooted the project in its budget for 2011-12. According to officials, it will use modern software to assess the gaps in its network and devise ways of correcting and upgrading the network.
"We have started the exercise of identifying the consultant for this project with the target to start work on ground in the coming financial year. We hope to get the support of Delhi government and expect funding under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission," said NDMC Chairman Parimal Rai. While the cost of the project is yet to be ascertained, according to sources in NDMC, it could run into Rs. 200 crore to Rs. 300 crore.
"Recent experiences have shown that ensuring adequate and good quality water supply is going to become more and more challenging in the coming years. Taking this into account, we have planned an ambitious project for improvement of service-level benchmarks in the water sector through reduction in leakages and also reduction in non-revenue water with the ultimate goal of providing 24X7 water supply to our residents," said NDMC spokesperson Anand Tiwari.
The civic body will use software which will be GIS based to identify the weak and strong points of its network. "The project will need upgrading of network, which has already been done in most areas of NDMC. We also have to take the Central Public Works Department on board," said an official. NDMC has also set a target to reach tap water in every house.
In the budget, NDMC has also brought in a proposal for setting up of three tertiary treatment plants at Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden and Sanjay Park in Sarojini Nagar for recycle and reuse of waste water for gardening.
