Non-Revenue Water Reduction
Background & Objective
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is spending Rs. 11.94 crores annually for maintenance of the water supply to the town. Within this, the expenditure for maintenance of headworks, including power bills, chemicals, repairs and establishment, is around Rs. 4.67 crores. To reduce the maintenance expenses, it was decided to access the unaccounted-for water in the VMC area to find out the quantity of water being wasted.
Implementation
Pilot studies were taken up at two reservoirs by fixing water meters, level meters and data loggers to access the UFW at reservoirs. The corporation had engaged consultants, conducted surveys and studied the actual quantity of water pumped into the reservoirs, the quantity supplied and the actual quantity reaching the households. A detailed project report for the implementation of 24X7 water supply and reduction of NRW was prepared and submitted to the government of India.
Output & Outcomes
UFW in the pilot areas was reduced from 17,838 KL to 7,828 Kl within one month.
