National Urban Water Awards
RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE IN URBAN WATER MANAGEMENT
Nashik Municipal Corporation
Improvement In Water Supply To The Public
Background & Objective
Nashik Municipal Corporation was incorporated in the year 1982 by merging three municipal councils, namely Nashik, Nashik Road & Satpur, and the surrounding 23 small villages. The population of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) was 4.32 lakhs and water supply was 60 MLD. Keeping in view the vastly increasing population, NMC appointed consultants for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the future population of 17.50 lakhs for the year 2011.
Implementation
As per the suggestions of the consultants, various works such as improvement in head works, pumping stations, augmentation in water treatment capacity, upgradation in raw water & pure water transmission pipelines, strengthening the distribution pipelines network, construction of ESRs in the newly developed areas, and various rectification & rehabilitation works, are in progress & will be completed in the near future.
Output & Outcomes
  • Due to implementation of the Direct Pipeline scheme, NMC was able to lift the relatively good quality raw water as compared to previous years from Gangapur dam with sufficiently improved pumping capacity
  • NMC was able to supply treated water to the consumers by gravity, which resulted in substantial savings in energy & treatment costs
  • Due to repair & rectification works and installation of flow meters, the water loss due to leakage & transmission losses will be reduced below the acceptable limits
  • Under the energy audit program, the existing low capacity pumping machineries are being replaced by new improved capacity pumping machinery at various locations, resulting in energy saving
  • Nashik municipal Corporation has also established complaint register centres at all the six divisional offices & at the central office, wherein citizens can register their complaints on telephone between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm
  • Almost 100% complaints registered from Jan 2007 were attended to immediately
Sustainability
Continuous monitoring is required for the sustainability of the project.
