Narmada Water Supply Scheme
Background & Objective
The water supply system in Indore is majorly served by the Narmada river (75% of share of water). To have an adequate water supply in the city, the Narmada Scheme - phase 1 and 2 - was introduced till the year 2006, but by immense pressure of the population of the city, the two schemes failed to fulfill the demand. As in the year 2004 the demand was 300 mld and the availability was only 180 mld, the Narmada Water Supply Scheme 3 was introduced, with a target of fulfilling the demand till year 2021, i.e., the capacity of 360 mld. The financial arrangements of the scheme are given below.
Indore Narmada Scheme
Implementation
The implementation process of the entire scheme includes the following:
  1. Purification of present water supply
  2. Water treatment plant & water supply distribution pipeline work
  3. Extension of water supply distribution system
  4. Metering
Output & Outcomes
  1. 100% metering will be done till the year 2008-09, and after, that flat rates per month will not be in effect.
  2. From the year 2009, consumers using standposts will be charged.
  3. Recovery of water tax is 41% till date, and it is proposed to increase it till 75%.
Sustainability & Replicability
This project is sustainable as it is formulated keeping in mind the demand till year 2021. And 100% metering will definitely help in cost recovery.
