Water Supply Scheme In Bhagur
Background & Objective
Bhagur is a small town with a population of 15,006 as per the 2001 census, and is situated in Nashik district of Maharashtra towards the south of Nashik city. With its increasing migration flow and increasing population, the capacity of the water supply scheme was inadequate for the town. It was necessary to design a water supply scheme to cater to the needs of an increased population, keeping in mind the future growth of the population.
Implementation
The second phase of the water supply scheme for Bhagur city was implemented by MJP and run by the council itself. At present, its water capacity serves the present population of 15,000 in a one-time supply. The council supplies the water 2 times per day for 2 hours, thus rationing the supply at 160 lpcd. All the connections are unmetered. Bhagur Municipal Council has established a system of testing of drinking water samples obtained from different areas of city and also from slums. The council has provided authorized water connections in slum areas with separate overhead tanks.
Output & Outcomes
  • The Maharashtra State Electricity Board gave an exemption of 50% on the outstanding arrears, and the council paid the remaining 50%. At present the council has no outstanding to the electricity board on its water supply scheme. In the process, the council saved its amount of Rs. 8 lakhs.
  • At present the council has no outstanding or loan of any government or any other financial institution.
  • The council has not provided any stand post.
  • There are no unauthorized water connections.
  • No leakage is found in water pipelines.
  • The council has made it mandatory to provide a rainwater-harvesting system while giving the approvals of new constructions.
  • There is separate trained staff for water supply
  • The council, with the support of schools and other organizations in town, arranged a special march for the awareness of water saving and utilization, through slogans.
  • With public participation, a separate cofferdam near intake well in Darana river has been built, which may serve a purpose in case water resources are in a critical position.
Sustainability
Can be sustainable with proper monitoring of the ongoing initiatives.
